Basics

What NEET is, who's it for, and why it exists.

What is NEET?
NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is the single national-level entrance exam for admission to undergraduate medical, dental, AYUSH, and veterinary courses in India. NEET is conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) once a year, typically on the first Sunday of May.
What is NEET UG vs NEET PG?
NEET UG is the undergraduate medical entrance exam (for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BVSc, etc.). NEET PG is the postgraduate entrance for MD/MS programs after MBBS. Most NEET aspirants in school are preparing for NEET UG.
What courses can I get into through NEET?
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), BDS (Dentistry), BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homeopathy), BUMS (Unani), BSMS (Siddha), BVSc & AH (Veterinary), and B.Sc Nursing in some states. MBBS is the most sought-after.

Eligibility & dates

Who can apply, when, and what's required.

Who is eligible for NEET 2027?
Any Indian citizen who has passed (or is appearing in) Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (or Biotechnology) as compulsory subjects. Minimum 50% in PCB (40% for SC/ST/OBC, 45% for PWD). Minimum age: 17 years on December 31 of the year of admission. There is no upper age limit (the Supreme Court struck it down in 2022).
How many attempts are allowed in NEET?
Unlimited. Since 2022, NTA removed the 9-attempt cap. There is no maximum number of times you can take NEET, as long as you meet eligibility.
Can I give NEET while in Class 12?
Yes — students who are appearing in their Class 12 board exams in the same year as NEET can apply. Admission is conditional on actually clearing Class 12.
When is NEET 2027?
NEET UG 2027 is expected on the first Sunday of May 2027 (May 2, 2027) based on historical scheduling. NTA confirms the exact date 2–3 months before the exam.
When does NEET registration open?
Registration typically opens in February–March each year, ~2 months before the exam. The application form is available at neet.nta.nic.in (the official NTA portal).
What is the NEET application fee?
₹1,700 for General/EWS/OBC. ₹1,000 for SC/ST/PWD/Third Gender. ₹9,500 for international centres. Fees are revised annually — check the NTA notice for the current cycle.

Exam pattern & marking

Question structure, time limit, scoring rules.

What is the NEET 2027 exam pattern?
NEET is a single 200-minute paper with 180 multiple-choice questions: 45 Physics, 45 Chemistry, 90 Biology (45 Botany + 45 Zoology). Total marks: 720 (180 questions × 4 marks). Each question has 4 options with one correct answer.
Is NEET MCQ only?
Yes — NEET is fully multiple-choice. Each question has 4 options with one correct answer. There are no descriptive, numerical-input, or matrix-match questions.
What is the NEET marking scheme?
+4 marks for each correct answer, −1 mark for each incorrect answer, 0 marks for unattempted. Maximum score: 720. The negative-marking rule makes NEET strategy quite different from purely positive-marking exams.
How long is NEET?
200 minutes (3 hours 20 minutes). For 180 questions this is roughly 67 seconds per question on average. There is no separate sectional time limit — you can allocate time across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as you wish.
Is there sectional time limit in NEET?
No. The 200 minutes are flexible — you can spend any amount on any section. But each section has a fixed number of questions you must attempt within the same total time.
Are there optional questions in NEET?
Since NEET 2024, the 'Section B with optional questions' format was removed. You now attempt all 180 questions — no optional pool.

Syllabus

What's covered, what isn't, what changed.

What is the NEET syllabus?
Class 11 and Class 12 NCERT syllabus for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. NMC (National Medical Commission) revises the official syllabus periodically — the most recent major revision was for NEET 2024.
Is NCERT enough for NEET?
For Biology and Inorganic Chemistry, NCERT is roughly 85% of the source. Most questions are quoted near-verbatim. For Physics and Physical/Organic Chemistry, NCERT is the foundation but additional problem books are recommended (e.g., HC Verma for Physics, MTG for Biology MCQs).
What's the most important chapter in NEET?
By question count: Human Physiology (~12 questions/year), Genetics & Evolution (~10/year), Mechanics (~10/year), Organic Chemistry (~12-15/year). Together these four cover roughly half the paper.
Did the NEET syllabus change for 2024?
Yes — NMC released a revised syllabus for NEET 2024 with some additions, deletions, and reorganization of topics. NEET 2025 and 2026 used the same revised syllabus. Check the official NMC notification for the exact list of changes.

Scores, results, cutoffs

Qualifying marks, percentile, and rank.

What is a good score in NEET?
Above 600 puts you in the competitive zone for government MBBS. Above 650 places you in the top ~3,000 ranks (premier government colleges). Above 680 is AIIMS/JIPMER-level. Below 500 typically means BDS, BAMS, BHMS, or private MBBS.
What is the NEET qualifying cutoff?
The minimum qualifying percentile is 50th for General, 40th for SC/ST/OBC. In recent years this corresponded to roughly 137–164 marks for General. The qualifying cutoff is the bare minimum — actual MBBS admission requires far higher scores.
How is NEET rank calculated?
Your All-India Rank is determined by your raw score, with tie-breaking rules: (1) higher Biology score, (2) higher Chemistry score, (3) fewer wrong answers, (4) older candidate. NTA publishes detailed rank-vs-marks tables after each result.
When is the NEET result?
Approximately 4–6 weeks after the exam. NEET 2025 results were declared in mid-June. Results are available at neet.nta.nic.in with marks, percentile, and All-India Rank.

Counselling & admission

From rank to college seat.

Who conducts NEET counselling?
MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) handles 15% All-India Quota seats and central institutes. State-level counselling boards handle 85% state-quota seats. Each has separate registration and choice-filling rounds.
How many MBBS seats are there in India?
Approximately 1.08 lakh MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges as of 2024 (rising every year). About 56,000 are government seats — these are highly competitive and the focus of most NEET aspirants.
Can I get MBBS abroad through NEET?
Yes — qualifying NEET is mandatory to study MBBS abroad if you intend to practice in India. After the foreign degree, you must clear FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) — soon being replaced by NExT (National Exit Test).

Preparation

Practical answers about how to prepare.

How many hours a day should I study for NEET?
If you have 12+ months: 6–8 productive hours/day. 6–12 months out: 8–10 hours/day. Final 3 months: 10–12 hours/day with heavy weighting on full-length mocks. Quality of focused practice matters more than raw hours.
Is coaching necessary for NEET?
No, but it depends on your discipline. Self-study with NCERT, problem books, and timed past-paper mocks can absolutely score 650+. Coaching helps with structure, peer comparison, and mock-test access. Many top scorers self-study or use online resources only.
How many full mocks should I solve before NEET?
At least 10 full-length, full-timing mocks. Top scorers typically do 15–25. The number matters less than the quality of review — solving 25 mocks without analyzing wrong answers is worse than solving 10 with deep review.
Should I skip questions in NEET?
Yes, strategically. Negative marking (−1) means a 50/50 guess on average loses ~0.5 marks (you're equally likely to gain 4 or lose 1). Only attempt questions where you can rule out at least 2 options — that brings expected value back to positive.
What's the best book for NEET?
Single best: NCERT (Class 11 + 12 Physics, Chemistry, Biology). For practice: MTG NCERT Fingertips for Biology, DC Pandey/HC Verma for Physics, MS Chouhan for Organic Chemistry, OP Tandon for Physical Chemistry. Plus a strong past-paper question bank like DuckTest.
